If you’re looking for a peaceful weekend escape from Melbourne, Bringalbit Country Retreat is the perfect spot. Nestled in the Macedon Ranges, just over an hour from Melbourne’s CBD, we spent two relaxing nights at the Woolshed Hill House, surrounded by stunning gardens, wildlife, and historic charm.
Arriving at Bringalbit Country Retreat
We arrived at Bringalbit Country Retreat on a rainy Friday evening, excited to explore the area we had heard so much about. Susan, the friendly owner, welcomed us into the Bringalbit Homestead with a warm fire and shared fascinating stories about the history of the gardens and property, which dates back to the 19th century. We felt like we had stepped into another world, surrounded by beauty and nature.
The Woolshed Hill House was the perfect retreat, cozy yet spacious, with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a full kitchen. The house’s rustic charm added to the experience, and we made full use of the heaters and the fresh farm eggs Susan had left for us. It was the ideal setting for a relaxing weekend away.
You can book the same accommodation at Woolshed Hill House on Riparide for your own getaway.
Exploring the Gardens & Wildlife
One of the highlights of our stay was exploring the Bringalbit Open Garden. We took a peaceful walk through the beautiful grounds, filled with oak trees, colorful flowerbeds, and serene ponds. The property is home to all kinds of animals, including highland cows, chickens, and even a peacock! Feeding the cows and enjoying the lush surroundings made for a delightful morning.
We also discovered the olive tree garden right outside our door. With a cup of coffee in hand, it was the perfect way to start the day, surrounded by birds and peaceful countryside views.
Wine Tasting in the Macedon Ranges
A trip to the Macedon Ranges wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local wine. We started at Hanging Rock Winery, where we enjoyed tastings and views of the nearby vineyards and Hanging Rock Reserve. The peaceful atmosphere and high-quality wines made it a must-visit spot.
We also visited Mount Towrong Vineyard, which was another highlight of the trip. With stunning views and delicious local wine, we couldn’t resist staying for a glass of Lagrein 2019. The owner was kind enough to share the history of the vineyard, adding a special touch to our visit.

Hiking & Nature: Camel’s Hump Lookout
For a bit of adventure, we hiked to Camel’s Hump Lookout. This short 20-minute return trail offers panoramic views of the Macedon Ranges. Even on a cloudy day, the view was worth the effort and provided a great outdoor activity before heading back to relax.
On the property itself, the Bringalbit Creek Hike was a lovely, peaceful trek. We enjoyed walking along the creek and admiring the surrounding countryside, making it a perfect morning walk.
Day Trips to Woodend and Kyneton
On our way back to Melbourne, we stopped in Woodend for breakfast at The Full Moon Saloon. This charming town has plenty of cafes and shops to explore, and the local atmosphere makes it a great spot to pause before heading home.
We also made a quick visit to Kyneton, a town rich with history and character. If you’re interested in visiting another beautiful destination near Kyneton, check out my post on the Lavandula Lavender Farm, which is another great day trip from Melbourne.

Our weekend at Bringalbit Country Retreat was exactly what we needed.
