DIY Housewarming Basket

DIY Housewarming Basket

I love giving gifts and I love coming up with the perfect gift to give the people in my life. Gift Baskets are one of my favorite gifts to give because they’re easily customizable to the person you’re giving it to and they’re also extremely thoughtful gifts to give.

I’ve been giving gift baskets for the past couple of years for birthdays, Christmas, and just about for any occasion. I recently had a friend that moved into a new house and it also happened to be her birthday around the same time too. I thought it was the perfect time to throw together a DIY Housewarming Basket for her and share it with you guys on my blog!

I also made a YouTube video of how I put together the DIY Housewarming Basket. If you didn’t know, I relaunched my YouTube Channel and have expanded on my blog content here on Our Wandering Mind through videos, but also have created additional content completely separate from my blog on my YouTube as well. I would definitely appreciate you checking it out and considering subscribing.

What You’ll Need:

Obviously, to make a gift basket, you’ll need some type of basket. You can put together your items in just about anything though, a tote, a box, or I’ve seen some really great gift baskets where they used a crockpot or cooking appliance as the “basket” aspect of the gift.

I simply used a black wire basket that I picked up at Kmart here in Australia, but I’m sure you could find it at craft stores like Michael’s or Amazon in the U.S. Not only is this basket really affordable, but it’s also super practical. I love the chalkboard aspect on the front of the basket where I’m able to write a little message like “Welcome Home” “Happy Birthday” or whatever appropriate message for the occasion. This basket is also super practical and versatile for my gift-recipient as well. After receiving my gift basket, they can use the basket around their house and label it for anything like “Storage” “Linens” or anything they please. This makes baskets like this also kind of present on its own and not just simply something to hold your items!

The Theme of Basket:

Next, you’ll want to think of what type of items you want to put in your basket or what type of theme you want to go for. As I said, I went for a housewarming basket theme so immediately I thought of kitchen items. Cooking utensils, seasonings, tea towel, oils, any items that you would find in a kitchen would be perfect to include in this basket.

As I mentioned in my video, other awesome Housewarming Basket ideas can be Italian Pasta Night with some sauce, herbs, fresh pasta, and a cooking pot or a Pancake Breakfast basket with a mixing bowl, pancake mix, syrup etc. You can really get as creative as you want with these baskets, which I love!

I knew that I wanted to include a wooden board in my housewarming basket. As you may know, I absolutely love making cheese platters so a wooden board is a must for me in the kitchen and something that I had to include for my friend’s housewarming basket.  Not only can my gift-recipient use the board if she wants to make platters of her own, but it’s super practical to use as a chopping board as well.

I also love candles. If you’ve read any of my home related blog posts such as my 5 Ways to Refresh Your Home For Free, I just about always mention candles and how much I believe they not only transform your home and create a beautiful ambiance in the space, but they also give the house a nice scent and make the space feel homier.

Personally, I love musky or fresh scents. However, some people may love extremely fruity scents and hate musky scents. Because of this, I think that going with a fresh, clean smelling candle is a very safe option to include in your housewarming basket and especially with all the moving, having a fresh, clean scent throughout their home will probably be very appreciated.

To finish off the items in my basket, I added some personalize items like a tea and mug. I know that my gift recipient loves tea, so including some tea and a beautiful blue mug to compliment the blue in the candle is the perfect addition to the basket.

Lastly, I included some foaming soap with some blue accents on the packaging as well. I wouldn’t say I went for a “blue theme” with this housewarming basket, but just having items that complement each other will make the basket more visually appealing so that’s what I went for with the blue elements.

Living Element:

I always like to include a living element in my gift basket. I’m personally a plant-lover. My house is full of plants and I think that adding some living plants just add so much color and life to any space. Since this is a kitchen-themed basket, I thought that Basil,(my favorite herb) would be the perfect living element to this Housewarming Basket.

If you didn’t want to do a potted plant or are not doing a kitchen-themed basket, getting some fresh flowers or just some greenery you can find outside would also be just as lovely in your basket! I just think to have that living element in your basket just adds so much and is really the finishing touch to the basket.

Assembling Your Basket:

Once you have all your items, it’s time to assemble your basket. There’s no how-to or trick to putting together your basket, but what I personally like to do is start with the bigger items in the back and work my way up to the front of the basket.

Putting together your basket will involve a lot of shifting things around and moving things into different spots, but once you get everything in and how you want it, your basket will look perfect!

And that’s it! Super easy and now you have a beautiful gift that I’m sure anyone in your life would be more than thrilled to receive! I hope you enjoyed this super easy DIY Housewarming Basket and give it a try for yourself! Do you like giving gift baskets as gifts? Let me know in the comments down below!
